ASTYM Technique® (Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilizaiton) Do you have a chronic tendinitis problem?
Many people suffer from nagging, lingering pain from tendon inflammation (tendinitis). While various forms of treatment such as injections, ultrasound, iontophoresis, exercise, massage, or other forms of treatment may help reduce symptoms, the ASTYM Technique® system is used to stimulate regeneration and healing of soft tissues, improving tissue strength and alignment to allow you to return to an active lifestyle.
What is ASTYM Technique®?
The ASTYM Technique® system is a therapy approach that is applied by a physical or occupational therapist. The treatment addresses problems such as:
Post surgical scarring / fibrosis
Other fibrotic conditions
Tendinitis
Bursitis
Plantar fascitis
Soft tissue tightness
Muscle strain
Elbow epicondylitis
Carpal tunnel syndrome
that occur in soft tissues as the result of trauma, surgery, or overuse. The therapist applies ASTYM Technique® soft tissue mobilization using instruments along the surface of the skin to locate these problem areas and start the body's healing process. As the body heals, the therapist prescribes specific exercise and activity which will help guide the healing allowing you to return to activities without pain and limitaiton.
What does an ASTYM Technique® treatment involve?
Your therapist will:
Perform a thorough evaluation of your condition looking at flexibility, strength, and areas of pain, fibrosis, and trigger points.
Use the instruments along the surface of the skin to treat painful areas and other problem areas that may contribute to your condition.
Instruct you in a custom-designed stretching and exercise program to help your body rebuild healthy tissue.
Treatment is usually 2x/week for a total of 3-8 visits. However our therapists manage each patient's case specific to their needs.
What results can you expect from ASTYM Technique® treatment?
During treatment you may feel areas that are "rough" or "bumpy". These are the areas that need to be addressed.
Over the course of treatment you will notice that as these rough areas smooth out, your pain will decrease and your function will increase.
Following treatment, you may notice bruising and soreness to touch in areas that were rough. This shows that the body is addressing the abnormal tissue through the natural healing process.
You will be encouraged to remain active throughout the treatment process.
You will have an exercise and self managment program that you can perform at home.
Most patients experience a significant soft tissue change with a decrease in their symptoms.
